Academy Chess

Develop your mind with the game of Kings & Queens.

Academy Chess is run by Grandmaster, Matthew Turner, the Head of Chess at Millfield. Students will study a range of opening, middlegame and endgame concepts and learn how to apply these in their own game. The academy will emphasize the key opening principles, namely controlling the centre, developing Knights and Bishops and getting castled early. Basic tactical ideas will be explored such as pins, forks and skewers and students will learn to apply these in practical circumstances. Students are also given advice on how to tackle checkmating puzzles, ranging from simple mates in one move, to more subtle examples, involving non-forcing continuations, and will look at endgame situations to see the importance of ‘the opposition.’
