Job Vacancy : Pastoral Assistant

We are looking for a Pastoral Assistant to assist the Pastoral Manager with their role to guide and oversee our pastoral team this summer. Millfield English Language Holiday Courses are well established and many staff return year after year. The Holiday Courses consist of morning classroom teaching (taken by qualified teachers), followed by afternoon activities both sporting and non-sporting (taken by the activity staff) and an evening social programmes (run on a rota basis with all staff). There is a full day excursion on a Wednesday (supported by activity and pastoral staff) and a half day excursion on a saturday afternoon (supoorted by teaching and pastoral staff).

All students and a majority of the staff are accommodated in the one of the schools’ modern boarding houses throughout their time with us. Up to 15 boarding houses could be occupied at one time (dependent on student numbers) of which each will be led by a Houseparent and an Assistant Houseparent. Each house will be occupied with approximately 20-50 students and staff. The Pastoral Manager is responsible for all Houseparents and Assistant Houseparents. As the Pastoral Assistant you will assist the Pastoral Manager with the running of the pastoral team.

Person Specification

  • Ability to organise both staff and students
  • Experience of working in a residential position and/or a residential summer school
  • Responsible and hard working nature
  • Excellent team working skills
  • Good communication skills with people at all levels
  • Good ICT skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Outgoing personality
  • Experience of working with young children is preferred
  • First Aid qualification is desirable but not essential as basic training will be provided at induction
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to get involved in all aspects of summer school life

Job Description

As the Pastoral Assistant you will assist with the running of the pastoral team ensuring the highest standards are being met with regards to the running of the boarding houses. This will include checking cleaning routines and all damage checks are completed so that the high standard of the fabric of the boarding houses are being maintained. Student welfare and safety will be at the forefront of your job, as well as being there to support the Houseparents and the Assistant Houseparents.

As you will be primarily responsible for student welfare as part of your duty of care you will work closely with on site medical staff to ensure student care is at its highest. This will include ensuring students receive onsite and offsite medical health care when needed. You will also need to ensure a accurate log is being kept by pastoral staff when dispensing medicines (training will be given during the induction)

You will also be responsible for the organisation of the rooming of both students and staff.

On arrival and departure days you will assist with the meeting and greeting of new students on the campus and help to create a staff duty rota for the Sunday transfer days.

You will be responsible for the pastoral team in the Pastoral Managers’ absence.

The course dates for summer 2018 are Sunday 8th July - Sunday 19th August.

Induction Training

Compulsory Induction training is immediately prior to the start of the course (paid pro rata).

Contracts

The Pastoral Assistant contracts will be for the duration of the specific course with the possible addition of some set up and clean up time paid pro rata.

Time Off

The Pastoral Assistant will have one day off per week. Special requests for additional time off are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Remuneration

Competitive salary, free food and accommodation, plus holiday pay which is calculated at 12.07%.
