Job Vacancy : Houseparent
We are looking for a number of enthusiastic Houseparents to join the pastoral team this summer for up to six weeks. Millfield English Language Holiday Courses are well established and many staff return year after year. The Holiday Courses consist of morning classroom teaching (taken by qualified teachers), followed by afternoon activities both sporting and non-sporting (taken by the activity staff) and an evening social programme (run on a rota basis with all staff). There is a full day excursion on a Wednesday (supported by activity and pastoral staff) and a half day excursion on a saturday afternoon (supoorted by teaching and pastoral staff).
As a Houseparent you will be in charge of one of the many boarding houses in which both the students and staff will stay in throughout the course. There could be between 20-50 people staying in your house at one time. Houseparents are supported by an Assistant Houseparent as well as the activity and teaching staff who stay in the boarding house.
We are looking for enthusiastic and energetic staff who have the following attributes:
- Responsible and caring nature
- Ability to cope in stressful situations and work to deadlines
- Well organised
- Good literacy and clear verbal communication skills
- Ability to enthuse and manage others
- Experience of working with young children and large groups is preferred
- Experience of working on a residential summer school is preferred but not essential
- First Aid qualification is desirable but not essential as basic training will be provided at induction
- Willingness to get involved in all aspects of the summer school life
You will be responsible for the welfare and wellbeing of the students and the fabric of the boarding house accommodation. You are in a pivotal role to ensure all students (and staff) are happy and safe during their stay away from home.
Duties will include checking both staff and students in on their arrival and out on their departure. You will have to give fire briefs and house inductions on arrival ensuring all rules are adhered to in the boarding houses for the safety and comfort of all students and staff accommodated. You will be responsible for the collection, safe keeping and returning of travel tickets, passports and pocket money.
If there are any sick students you have the responsibility for taking them to the Medical Centre and providing subsequent care of the students in conjunction with the nursing staff. Training for the dispensation of medication is given during the staff induction.
You will organise the staff rota, relaying messages, organising the students in preparation for evening social events (the evening social programme is organised by the Assistant Houseparent with the Social Team) and completing any required paperwork before the deadlines set.
You are responsible for checking cleaning and laundry routines are completed effectively. You must report all damages/defects are reported to the Pastoral Manager and ensure all health and safety procedures are adhered to at all times.
You will also assist the Excursions Team and Social Managers with accompanying students to prearranged excursions and social events which will include house tournaments and competitions.
You will have to complete a Pastoral report for each student at the end of their course onto our computer system.
Attendance at all meetings relevant to your role is compulsory.
The course dates for summer 2019 are Sunday 7th July - Sunday 18th August.
Applications should be submitted by the end of March 2019 and if you are successful you will be invited to attend the Trials Day in April 2019.
Compulsory Induction training is immediately prior to the start of the course (paid pro rata).
Pastoral Staff contracts vary from a minimum of two to six weeks from the course start date. Most new staff are offered four weeks with all contracts extendable by mutual consent and dependent on student numbers.
Pastoral Staff will have one full day off per week, day dependent on campus. Special requests for additional time off are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Competitive salary, free food and accommodation, plus holiday pay which is calculated at 12.07%.
