Kokrobite Chiltern Centre

Kokrobite Chiltern Centre (KCC) is a charitable, not for profit NGO (Non-Government Organisation) founded in 2004 by Jane and Martial Zohoungbogbo. Kokrobite is a fishing village located about an hour from Ghana's capital, Accra. When Jane first went to Kokrobite she quickly realised that there was a need to support children who were not attending school and also to help educate and empower some of the women of the community. Martial Zohoungbogbo has been living in Kokrobite for more than twenty years and is well known in the local community.

KCC works with children and young people enabling them to attend school and gain an education. They also work with children aged 3 - 19 years out of school hours and provide additional classes in their Learning Centre to help the children learn to read, write, speak English and be competent in basic Math procedures. They have a place to do their homework and assistance with this when necessary. In addition KCC offers the opportunity to play sport - football, volleyball and cricket are the current favourites! Children attending school are provided them with uniform, shoes, school bags, books, stationery, at least one good meal every day and funds for medical care and haircuts when necessary.

Millfield English Language Holiday Courses have been supporting and working with Kokrobite Chiltern Centre since 2008 when students and staff collectively fundraised and were able to sponsor the education of 10 children. The fundraising as part of the summer course has continued since then and since 2015 the generosity of the staff and students of the Millfield English Language Holiday Course has enabled 20 children to attend school each year and this includes providing the children with stationery, uniforms, shoes, school bags and food each day. Mark Greenow, Director of Holiday Courses has now visited KCC twice to see the project in action for himself and says, "It has been a personal pleasure to be able to give a little back to such a worthwhile cause run by two such selfless and caring people. Keep up the good work Jane and Martial!"

In 2014 term time students at Millfield School decided they would also like to support the project so at the end of each summer term the Prefects under the guidance of Eric Jones, Assistant Head Co-Curriculum, collect up usable but unwanted clothing, shoes and books. These are then packed up and shipped to Ghana where KCC share them amongst the children of Kokrobite and the surrounding villages. Typically the shipment arrives sometime during September in time for the start of the new school year and is always met with great excitement and gratitude.
