Job Vacancy : Activity Assistant

We are looking for a number of enthusiastic Activity Staff to join the team this Easter for two weeks. Millfield English Language Holiday Courses are well established and many staff return year after year; they work hard and play harder. The Holiday Courses consist of morning classroom teaching (taken by qualified teachers), followed by afternoon activities both sporting and non-sporting (taken by the activity staff) and an evening social programme (run on a rota basis with all staff). All Activity staff positions are residential.

Person Specification

We are looking for enthusiastic and energetic staff who have the following attributes:

  • Responsible nature
  • Good communication skills
  • Team working skills
  • Outgoing personality
  • Coaching skills desirable but not essential
  • Experience of working with young children is preferred but not essential
  • Experience of working on a residential summer school is preferred but not essential
  • First Aid qualification is desirable but not essential as basic training will be provided at Induction
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to get involved in all aspects of summer school life

Job Description

You will be responsible for taking groups of students during their afternoon activities and supervising them at all times as part of the Sport and Recreation programme. Students who select Sports and Recreation will have a wide range of sporting and non-sporting activities to choose from each afternoon with typical choices including aerobics, dodgeball, football, hockey, tennis, volleyball, fitness, art, crafts, dance and many more. Staff are organised in liaison with the Activities Co-ordinator on a rota basis each week and will take two to three activities per afternoon. The Activities Co-ordinator places all staff on activities where they are comfortable and may have specific talents or experience as student safety and enjoyment is a priority. Students who select Sports and Recreation will attend four sessions per week (Mon, Tue, Thu and Fri).


Sports & Recreation sessions are followed by Club Time. Students take part in clubs that are based on the skills and interests of our students and staff. All Activities staff will be expected to lead a Club by themselves or with a colleague. In the past we have had clubs in music, computing, wildlife and ecology, rambling, keep-fit, origami and many others.


You will assist with the evening social activities programme that is organised and run on a rota basis by the Social Team.


You will also assist with pastoral duties, which could include ‘Morning Wake Up’ and ‘Lights Out’ in accordance with the agreed rota.


On arrival and departure days you will assist with the greeting of new students. During this time you will act as an escort on airport or station transfers as and when necessary.


You will assist with the excursions programme and this could include a one-day or whole weekend excursion. All students go on a full day excursion on a Wednesday (taken by activities staff) and a half-day excursion on a Saturday (taken by teaching staff).


Attendance at all relevant meetings is compulsory.


The course dates for Easter are Wednesday 5th April - 19th April 2017.


Applications should be submitted by mid-February 2017.

Induction Training

Compulsory Induction training is immediately prior to the start of the course (paid pro rata).

Time Off


Activities Staff have from Friday evening to Saturday evening off (unless they are part of a whole weekend excursion when they will be given time off in lieu). Special requests for additional time off are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Remuneration


Competitive salary, free food and accommodation, plus holiday pay which is calculated at 12.07%.
